Dip vs Gel Nails
Dip vs gel nails comes down to how you use your hands and how you like your nails to feel. Both last much longer than regular polish, both come in every color, and both have tradeoffs worth knowing before you book.

What gel polish is
Gel polish, often called shellac after one well-known brand, is a polish that stays soft until it is cured under an LED lamp. It goes on in thin coats, base, color and top, each one cured before the next. When you leave, it is fully hard and ready to go.
Gel polish is thin and flexible. It looks and feels very close to a fresh coat of regular polish, just with a longer-lasting shine. Most people get around two to three weeks of wear before grow-out or chips send them back.
At our Westlake suite, every gel manicure is done with the Brazilian method, so dry skin is cleared across the nail bed and color is placed slightly under the cuticle line for a clean grow-out.

What dip powder is
Dip powder uses a bonding base liquid and finely milled colored powder. The base is brushed on, the powder is applied by dipping or pouring, and the steps repeat for a few coats. An activator hardens the layers without a lamp, and a top coat seals the shine.
Dip ends up thicker and harder than gel polish. It adds noticeable strength to thin nails and usually lasts about three to four weeks. The finish is very smooth and glossy, though it can look a touch thicker at the edge than gel.
Dip vs gel nails: strength, wear and feel
If you are hard on your hands, dip has the edge for durability. It resists chipping well and adds a protective shell. Gel polish is thinner and more flexible, so it feels more natural but adds less strength.
For wear time, dip often lasts a week or so longer than gel polish. For finish, gel polish usually looks a little more delicate, especially with sheer or nude shades and detailed nail art.

Removal
Both come off with acetone. Gel polish is filed lightly to break the top coat, then soaked or wrapped until it lifts. Dip has more layers, so it takes more filing and a longer soak.
With either one, do not peel. Peeling pulls off layers of the natural nail along with the product and is the most common cause of thin, weak nails after a gel or dip habit. A gel polish change at our suite is $28 and includes careful removal.
Aftercare for dip and gel
Good habits make either service last longer. The basics are the same for both, and they take less than a minute a day.
- Rub cuticle oil into the skin and the edge of the nail every night.
- Wear gloves for dishes, cleaning and anything with harsh chemicals.
- Use the pads of your fingers, not your nails, to open cans, peel labels or scratch at stickers.
- If a corner lifts, book a fix instead of picking at it, because picking peels away layers of natural nail.
- Plan your next appointment before grow-out gets long, so the extra weight at the tip does not cause a break.
Price at our Westlake suite
A Brazilian gel manicure starts at $43. A dip powder manicure is $65. Gel polish can also be added to a pedicure for $15, and a gel polish change on hands or toes is $28.
How is a gel manicure applied, step by step?
A gel manicure at our suite starts with the same careful prep as any Brazilian manicure, then moves to the lamp.
- Nails are filed to shape and the surface shine is lightly buffed off.
- Dry skin is removed across the nail bed so the gel sits on a clean plate.
- A thin gel base coat is applied and cured.
- Two coats of color go on, each cured before the next, with the first one tucked slightly under the cuticle line.
- A gel top coat is cured for shine, then any sticky layer is wiped away.
- Cuticle oil finishes the service.
How is a dip manicure applied, step by step?
Dip takes a few more steps than gel polish, and most of the time goes into building and smoothing the layers.
- The nail is shaped and lightly buffed.
- Bonding base goes on, stopping short of the skin so no powder lands there.
- The nail is dipped, or powder is poured over it, and the loose powder is brushed off.
- That cycle repeats two or three times for even color and strength.
- Activator sets the layers, the surface is filed smooth, and a glossy top coat goes on.
Why does dip last longer than gel polish?
Thickness is most of the answer. Dip builds a hard shell several layers deep, so small knocks that would chip a thin gel coat barely mark it.
Gel polish is designed to be thin and flexible, so it shows wear at the tip sooner, especially on people who type a lot or work with their hands. Both end the same way, though. As the nail grows, the bare space at the base widens and the tip carries more weight, and that is when it is time to come back.
Is dip or gel better for thin, weak nails?
Dip adds more protection while it is on, which helps nails that tear or bend. Gel polish adds less strength but comes off with less filing and a shorter soak.
If your nails are thin because of past damage, the honest answer may be neither. Builder gel gives more support than gel polish and skips the repeated full removal that comes with dip, so your nails get a chance to grow out stronger.
What affects the cost of dip vs gel?
The service you pick sets the starting point, but add-ons change the total. A French or detailed art is [PRICE], chrome is $15, and ombre starts at $15.
Think about how often you will be back, too. A gel manicure costs less per visit, while dip may stretch a little longer between appointments. Over a few months, your habits matter more than the price of any one visit.
Dip and gel myths
- Myth: shellac and gel are different services. Shellac is one brand name for gel polish.
- Myth: dip does not need acetone to come off. It does, and usually for a longer soak than gel.
- Myth: dip is always better for your nails because there is no lamp. Removal habits affect nail health far more than how the product hardens.
- Myth: gel polish is too weak to protect nails. It is not a strengthener, but it does help the tip resist peeling while it is on.
- Myth: you can peel gel off if it is already lifting. Peeling still takes natural nail with it.
Danielle's recommendation: who should pick which
Pick gel if you want a thin, natural-feeling finish, you love sheer shades or detailed nail art, or you like to change colors every two to three weeks. It is also the easier option to pair with a Brazilian manicure for that crisp cuticle line.
Pick dip if your nails are thin or soft and you want extra strength without extensions, if you are hard on your hands, or if you want to stretch time between appointments.
If you want the strength of dip with the flex and finish of gel, ask about Luminary builder gel. It sits between the two and can be filled instead of fully removed.
- Natural feel and frequent color changes: gel
- Thin, soft nails or hard on your hands: dip
- Want strength plus fills: Luminary builder gel

Frequently asked questions
Is dip or gel better for your nails?
Neither is automatically better. Gel polish is thinner and usually easier to remove, while dip adds more strength. Gentle removal matters more than which one you choose.
Does dip last longer than gel?
Usually, yes. Dip often lasts about three to four weeks, while gel polish typically lasts about two to three weeks.
Which is stronger, dip or gel?
Dip is stronger and harder than gel polish. If you want even more structure with a gel finish, builder gel is the step up.
Does dip powder need a UV light?
No. Dip is hardened by an activator liquid. Gel polish needs to be cured under an LED lamp.
How much is a gel manicure in Westlake?
At our Westlake suite, a Brazilian gel manicure starts at $43. A dip powder manicure is $65.
Is shellac the same as gel?
Shellac is a brand name for a type of gel polish. Most people use the two words to mean the same service.
Which looks more natural, dip or gel?
Gel polish usually looks more natural because it is thinner. Dip can look slightly thicker at the edges.
Can you do nail art on dip powder?
Yes, but gel is generally easier for detailed art. Chrome, ombre and French tips are available as add-ons with either.
How do I remove dip or gel at home?
Lightly file the top coat, then soak in acetone until the product softens and lifts. Never peel or pry, because that takes layers of your natural nail with it.
Is dip or gel better for weak nails?
Dip adds more strength to weak nails than gel polish. For weak nails you want to grow out long-term, builder gel is often the best choice because it can be filled.
